Dragon Quest III Made the Franchise a Cultural Phenomenon — Series Creator on Unexpected Success

Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii shared how Dragon Quest III turned into a cultural phenomenon and why such immense success came as a surprise.

The Dragon Quest franchise has held the status of a true national treasure in Japan for several decades. The release of each new installment is considered a major event, and the launch of Dragon Quest III back in 1988 turned the series into a true cultural phenomenon.

Unexpected Hype and Long Lines

The creator of the cult series, Yuji Horii, recalled in an interview with Famitsu that the overwhelming success of the third installment came as a complete surprise to the developers. He understood that the game had the potential to become a hit, but no one expected such a massive frenzy.

Horii shared memories of the release day:

  • He specifically rode his bicycle to the Shinjuku district to see the line of fans with his own eyes.
  • People spent the entire night outside in the cold to purchase the coveted cartridge, which even made the developer feel somewhat uncomfortable toward the players.
  • Such immense success for the third installment brought not only joy, but also huge concerns and pressure ahead of the development of Dragon Quest IV.

Dragon Quest III cemented the franchise's status as the premier JRPG of its time, and recent remakes continue to introduce a new generation of players to this timeless classic.
