Why Disgaea Chose 2D Over 3D
The cult tactical role-playing game Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which originally debuted on the PS2, later appeared on the Nintendo DS, and received the Disgaea 1 Complete remaster on Nintendo Switch, could have looked completely different. Series creator and producer Sohei Niikawa revealed in an interview with Dengeki Online why Nippon Ichi Software decided to stick with 2D graphics during the era of mass transition into 3D space.
"A Survival Strategy for the Weak"
According to Niikawa, the decision to retain the 2D isometric style was driven purely by pragmatism and a limited budget:
"It was a survival strategy for the weak. When I saw Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation, I immediately thought: our company must by no means take that path. If we, with our meager resources, try to mindlessly imitate it, we will suffer a devastating blow."
Success Among Otaku Worldwide
The developers banked on their own signature humor, parody elements, and a deep tactical system. Niikawa added that when he saw Western players genuinely laughing at Japanese jokes, he was finally convinced that the otaku audience around the world thinks alike. This gave the developers the confidence to create the exact kind of projects they themselves found interesting and fun.
- The original release of the game took place in 2003.
- The version for Nintendo DS appeared in 2008 under the title Disgaea DS.
- The Disgaea 1 Complete remaster is available to Nintendo Switch owners.
