Studio Digital Eclipse and publisher Atari are releasing the collection Toy Story: Retro Roundup! on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The collection includes classic video game adaptations of Woody and Buzz's adventures from the '90s and early 2000s. However, fans noticed that games such as Toy Story 2 and A Bug’s Life are represented by their PlayStation versions, while releases for Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast are missing.
Why did the developers choose PlayStation versions specifically?
Digital Eclipse Editorial Director Chris Kohler explained the reasons behind this decision in an interview with Nintendo Everything, citing technology limitations and the development schedule:
«On every project, we have to consider scope, schedule, available tech, and other factors that determine what versions of games we can support. In this case, Toy Story: Retro Roundup was made possible largely thanks to the great emulation tech from Atari's Implicit Conversions. Future projects might branch out to other platforms as tech evolves», Kohler noted.
Emulation Details and Future Plans
Nintendo 64 architecture is historically considered difficult to emulate, while Dreamcast platform support would have required additional resources that did not fit into the collection's development timeframe. However, Digital Eclipse is known for occasionally updating its retro collections with new content after release.
- The collection includes classic 2D and 3D games from the Toy Story series.
- All 3D titles are based on versions for the original PlayStation.
- The collection is already available for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 owners alongside Toy Story 3 Complete Edition.
