Bloober Team on Switch 2 Exclusive ONYX: The Dark Grip: It's Innovation, Not a Risk

Bloober Team explained why the Switch 2 exclusive horror game ONYX: The Dark Grip is an innovative project designed purely for handheld mode.

Innovative Horror Exclusively for Switch 2

Broken Mirror Games studio, created in collaboration with Bloober Team, is developing an exclusive horror game, ONYX: The Dark Grip, for the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 console. The release is scheduled for 2027. A distinctive feature of the project is that it is being developed exclusively for handheld mode, transforming the console itself into an interactive window into the game's eerie world.

At the center of the story is a confrontation between two entities: an ordinary human (The Vessel) fighting for survival, and a powerful mysterious force (The God) that has taken over their body. Players will control both sides of this conflict, utilizing the unique hardware features of the Switch 2.

A Return to the Roots of Nintendo DS and Wii

The developers plan to fully leverage the console's capabilities, evoking the golden era of experimentation on the DS and Wii:

  • Touch screen: interacting with the environment and manipulating objects.
  • Gyroscope and tilt controls: unleashing the dark deity's power to destroy enemies.
  • Built-in microphone: the ability to warm the protagonist with breath before deadly cold consumes them.

Bloober Team executives Piotr Babieno and Tymon Smektala explained why they took this step. According to the developers, while creating a purely handheld exclusive seems risky, for them it is primarily an innovation and a way to build a strong connection with the Nintendo fan community, which consistently values fresh gameplay ideas over dry technical specifications.
