The upcoming horror dark comedy titled Buddy will receive an unusual promotional campaign. The film directed by Casper Kelly ("Too Many Cooks"), which hits theaters in late August 2026, will get its own official video game for the classic handheld console Game Boy Color.
Retro adaptation ahead of the film's release
The project, titled Buddy: The Video Game, is being developed by the studio playinstinct, with ModRetro acting as the publisher. The game's release on Game Boy Color cartridges is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
Features and game modes
The developers have prepared several diverse modes for players:
- Story Mode: A narrative mode that follows the events of the movie. Players will have to decide whether to appease Buddy or face his deadly wrath.
- Survival Mode: A storyline-free survival mode. Hide, gather resources, and try to hold out as long as possible while Buddy hunts you.
- Buddy Mode: The ability to transform into the orange unicorn Buddy and hunt children yourself, making your own rules.
- Mini Game Mode: A collection of lighthearted mini-games — dancing, drawing, driving, and other activities to take a break from the horror.
More details about the project and the physical release for the retro console will be revealed closer to launch.
