Dark Fantasy About a Cozy Onsen and Cosmic Horror
Recently, studio KADATH announced the ambitious JRPG Under Mythos for Nintendo Switch, scheduled for release in 2028. Veterans of the Japanese industry who contributed to such iconic projects as Pokémon, Tales of the Abyss, GRANDIA, and LUNAR are working on the game.
The game's plot tells the story of a lonely cat searching for its mother who ends up in an otherworldly realm. There, it begins working at a mysterious hot spring hotel, hosting bizarre guests. However, cozy daily life gradually descends into madness.
Lovecraft and Anxiety Around Artificial Intelligence
In an interview with 4Gamer, developer Yoichi Miyaji spoke about the key sources of inspiration for the game's atmosphere:
- H.P. Lovecraft's Cosmic Horror: the story references the novella "At the Mountains of Madness", where the Elder Things used shoggoths as slaves until the creatures gained self-awareness and revolted.
- The Development of Modern AI: the developers see a direct parallel between the shoggoth revolt and modern humanity's fears regarding artificial intelligence and losing control over technology.
The gameplay will combine caring for guests and expanding the hotel with dangerous ventures into distorted dungeons for resources and food, as well as dynamic action battles against bizarre monsters.
