SEGA Sammy CEO Haruki Satomi recalled the high-profile failure of Sonic Boom on the Wii U console and shared how this unsuccessful release prompted the company to create the iconic Sonic Mania.
The Path from Failure to Triumph
The release of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric in 2014 proved to be a real disaster: the game suffered from technical bugs, unpolished mechanics, and received devastating reviews from critics and fans. Realizing the crisis of trust from the community, SEGA's leadership decided to fundamentally change their approach to the Sonic the Hedgehog brand.
To regain the favor of longtime fans, the company brought in talented developers from the fan community, notably Christian Whitehead, which resulted in the creation of Sonic Mania. The game became a true hit and reminded players around the world of the classic magic of the series' 2D platformers.
