Nintendo has always followed its own unique path, ignoring general industry trends. Despite the Nintendo Switch console selling over 150 million units, the media often mentioned only the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft when discussing the so-called “console wars.”
Doug Bowser's Reaction
During an appearance on the GamesBeat Next legends panel, former Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser shared memories of how he was annoyed by the company's successes being ignored in the media:
“It’s interesting and even funny. I’m a pretty competitive person. There were times when I would read news about console wars, and they only mentioned Sony and Microsoft. I thought: what the heck? We sell 150 million consoles, and we’re not even included in the conversation? But at the same time, there are moments when I’m actually glad that we are not part of these disputes. Nintendo really chose to swim in its own ocean and did not allow itself to be dragged down into these battles.”
This “blue ocean” strategy allowed Nintendo to focus on creating a unique gaming experience without engaging in a direct technical race with competitors.
