Square Enix recently announced a full 3D remake of the cult 1995 JRPG — Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. The game is scheduled for release on February 16, 2027, on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, offering updated 3D graphics, full cutscene voice acting, a revamped combat system, and selectable difficulty levels.
Why was Commander Mode dropped?
During a recent livestream, the developers shared new details about the project. In particular, it was revealed that the remake will not feature the so-called "Commander Mode," which was present in the original. In this mode, the main protagonist did not take direct part in battle and instead issued commands to other party members.
According to the producer, the decision to abandon the mode was driven by budget and development schedule constraints. The team chose to focus on the overall quality of the game and refining the standard combat system.
Changes to Sarah's Storyline
In the classic version, players who chose Sarah as the main protagonist encountered an important plot moment where she could not fight on her own, forcing the game into Commander Mode. In the remake, this issue has been resolved differently:
- Sarah will be able to fully participate in battles throughout the entire game thanks to the "power of a miracle."
- The story justification is currently being kept secret.
- The decision was made after extensive team discussions and consultations with Akitoshi Kawazu, the director of the original 1995 game.
