The two-player cooperative intergalactic adventure Orbitals, set in a retro anime world, is already available exclusively on Switch 2. Players take on the roles of two explorers, Maki and Omura, who venture into the perilous depths of space to save their space station from a supernatural cosmic storm.
Atmosphere of Classic 80s and 90s Anime
Orbitals stands out with the special warmth and visual style of classic Japanese animation: the game features hand-drawn cinematic cutscenes by Studio Massket, full voice acting in eight languages, as well as an authentic soundtrack inspired by iconic works of that era.
In a new technical article on the official Unreal Engine blog, Shapefarm Assistant Art Director Johannes Varmedal explained how the team managed to achieve such an accurate recreation of the style:
- Access to the Unreal Engine 5 source code allowed modifying the standard render pipeline.
- The team developed custom shaders and filters to accurately convey the analog look of retro anime.
- Special attention was paid to the color palette and textures characteristic of 80s and 90s animated films.
Thanks to the flexibility of the engine and the hard work of the developers, Orbitals gives Switch 2 players a unique visual experience that combines modern technology with nostalgic aesthetics.
