A compromise for the collaboration with Epic Games
Recently, the iconic blue hedgehog Sonic appeared in Fortnite, but attentive players noticed that this is not quite the original hero, but rather an android or a robotic suit. Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka revealed details in an interview with IGN about how this collaboration received approval from Sega.
The real Sonic does not use weapons
According to Iizuka, the Epic Games team approached Sega regarding a potential crossover several years ago. The main obstacle was a fundamental rule of the speedy hedgehog's character:
- Canonically, the real Sonic will never pick up a firearm.
- Since Fortnite gameplay is heavily focused on gunplay, the developers had to make creative concessions.
- The solution was to create an android version of the character, which allowed the original hero's canonical image to remain intact.
This approach satisfied both the game's creators and fans, preserving the recognizable style of Sega's mascot even in the battle royale.
