Remake Development History and the Unimplemented Feature
The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma revealed an interesting detail regarding the development of the remake of the iconic game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 console. According to him, the developers seriously considered adding a full fast travel system with new teleportation points.
Why Did This Idea Arise?
Aonuma noted that the team clearly remembered how players in the original version of Ocarina of Time constantly used forward rolls so that Link would move through the world at least a bit faster. This prompted the developers to think about simplifying traversal across the vast locations of Hyrule with new mechanics.
The main reasons why this was discussed:
- A desire to modernize the traversal pace of classic Hyrule for newcomers;
- Observations of player behavior, as they sought any way to speed up movement;
- Adapting classic game design to modern standards of adventure games.
However, the team ultimately carefully weighed the balance between the authenticity of classic exploration and the convenience of modern gameplay before making a final decision.
