Behind the Scenes of Banjo-Kazooie: Rare's Internal Level Editor Revealed for the First Time

Rare behind-the-scenes footage from the 1998 development of Banjo-Kazooie has been released, showcasing Rare's in-game level editor for the first time.

Development Secrets of the Iconic 3D Platformer

Incredibly, even nearly three decades after the release of the original Banjo-Kazooie in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, we continue to discover new details about the creation of this legendary game. Thanks to a fresh behind-the-scenes video from Blaze Entertainment, players were able to see for the first time the in-game level editor that studio Rare used during the game's development.

The intriguing footage appeared as part of the presentation for the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack collection for Evercade devices, scheduled for release in October 2026. While the tool itself will not be available to end players, it was with its help that the developers tested key elements of the game in the 90s.

What Could Rare's Internal Editor Do?

The showcased clip reveals advanced developer tools:

  • Quick adjustment and repositioning of items in locations.
  • Instant switching and testing of gameplay sections in real time.
  • Management of lighting, triggers, and environmental parameters.

As a reminder, you can experience the classic Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription in the Nintendo 64 games catalog.
