Nintendo reveals details of classic game development by global teams

Nintendo has revealed details about international teams working on Nintendo Classics retro games and control customization on Nintendo Switch 2.

Global collaboration on retro classics

Nintendo has shared behind-the-scenes details about the development of Nintendo Classics applications for the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. As revealed in an interview, combined teams from Japan and overseas divisions are working on the preservation and adaptation of retro games.

New control features on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo's Japanese office handles the overall direction and management, while international teams are responsible for direct programming, implementation of special features, localization, and testing.

One prime example of this collaboration was the creation of the "View/Change Controls" feature for Nintendo Switch 2. It allows players to freely customize the button layout in classic projects. In particular, the development of this option was actively underway ahead of the first public demonstrations of GameCube games, prompting the team to focus on core functionality before the release.

How teams overcome time zones and language barriers

To establish effective collaboration between offices in different time zones, the company implemented several practical solutions:

  • Overseas studios were provided with working development hardware.
  • The teams regularly held joint online gaming sessions and used screen sharing to analyze issues.
  • A shared English language was used for mutual understanding between specialists during matches, which helped bring colleagues closer together.

Nintendo emphasized that project management constantly adapts to the needs of each individual game, ensuring the high quality of the retro catalog.
