The original Game Boy remains one of Nintendo's most successful and iconic consoles, with over 118 million units sold throughout its lifetime. Even today, indie projects continue to be released for the classic handheld, and recently a release dedicated to the history of the platform itself emerged.
The history of the handheld console on its very own cartridge
The creator of the GameBoyMuseum.com project, a non-profit digital archive with hundreds of documented rarities, has released the interactive GB Museum project in Game Boy ROM format. It can be run either on an emulator or written to a real cartridge for original hardware.
What GB Museum offers:
- 355 virtual exhibits: a detailed chronicle of Game Boy history and accessories with in-depth descriptions of each item.
- Convenient navigation: a built-in mini-wiki and full-text search across the knowledge base.
- Bookmark system: saving favorite pages using the cartridge's non-volatile memory (battery).
- QR codes: each exhibit generates a QR code directly on the console's 8-bit display, allowing you to instantly open the full online page on a smartphone.
This is a unique way to experience Nintendo's retro history right from the screen of the legendary handheld.
