A funny reaction to the announcement of Sony's first handheld
Former PlayStation head Shawn Layden shared a funny memory regarding a Nintendo employee's reaction to the first presentation of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console in the early 2000s.
On The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden recounted that shortly after the PSP was announced, he received a brief message from an acquaintance at Nintendo. The text was concise: "You bastards". To which Layden jokingly replied: "Hey, buddy, chill out, it's just business and entertainment!".
A Historic Rivalry
Despite Sony's high-profile entry into the handheld market with graphics that were impressive for the time, Nintendo confidently maintained its leadership thanks to the Nintendo DS:
- Nintendo DS sold over 154 million units worldwide.
- PlayStation Portable reached approximately 76.4 million consoles.
Layden also noted that if Sony were to make a full return to the handheld gaming market today, the company would have to very carefully consider the positioning of its device in the modern market.
