The Fight for Fair Play in Call of Duty
On the official release day of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the development team shared details about an update to the proprietary RICOCHET Anti-Cheat system aimed against so-called DMA cheats.
What Are DMA Cheats and Why Are They Dangerous?
Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheats use specialized external hardware to read data directly from RAM. This provides dishonest players with real-time information on opponents' locations. Because such devices operate outside the host PC or console operating system, they are significantly harder to detect using standard software-based security methods.
Initial Results of the Updated RICOCHET
Activision rolled out updated DMA cheat detection algorithms ahead of the early access launch, and the results were immediate:
- Numerous ban complaints have already been recorded across cheat developer and user communities.
- The Activision security team plans to continue adapting RICOCHET's protection algorithms in response to any changes in cheater methods.
- The measures are intended to ensure a fair multiplayer experience for players across all current platforms.
As a reminder, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is already available to players, including on the Switch 2 console.
