Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake for Switch 2 Built on Tears of the Kingdom Engine

The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 console has been developed on the LunchPack engine from Tears of the Kingdom, featuring numerous technical improvements.

The cult classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming to the Switch 2 console, and early critic reviews are already calling this remake one of Nintendo's most technically impressive and visually accomplished works. Thanks to dataminers, more technical details about the project's development have come to light.

Internal LunchPack Engine

As well-known dataminer OatmealDome discovered, the new version of Ocarina of Time was built on Nintendo's proprietary engine called LunchPack (also known as ModuleSystem). This very technology was used to develop The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 3, and Nintendo Switch Sports. Specifically for Switch 2, the engine underwent extensive optimizations and enhancements.

Key Features of the Updated Game

  • Modern graphics and performance: completely overhauled materials and textures, smooth framerates, significantly faster load times, and a live symphonic orchestral soundtrack.
  • Improved controls: Link has gained the ability to jump and sprint freely using dedicated buttons, while camera control using the right stick has become much more convenient.
  • A Living Hyrule: dialogues for key characters are now fully voice-acted, expanded story cutscenes have been added, and the dynamic day-and-night cycle is now active even in towns.
  • Threads of Time system: the ability to check progression at any moment and discover the next objective through a large adventure tapestry.
  • Interactive Ocarina: the ability to hum melodies using the microphone for Link to play them, or connect compatible musical accessories.
