The iconic Ori series returns: insiders hint at a new installment

Insiders report the development of a new installment in the iconic Metroidvania series Ori by a third-party studio for Xbox.

The Ori series may get an unexpected sequel

Rumors are circulating online that the enchanting Metroidvania series Ori is returning. According to reliable insider Nate the Hate, Xbox is preparing a new game in the franchise, but it is being developed by a different studio rather than the creators of the original dilogy, Moon Studios.

The information was also corroborated by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, who noted that a very unexpected sequel might appear among the Gamescom announcements. Later, Nate the Hate clarified on the ResetEra forum that it is indeed a new installment of Ori. According to other rumors, the project may be developed by one of Saber Interactive's divisions.

A new team and potential release

The previous games in the series—Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps—gained massive popularity, particularly among Nintendo Switch owners, thanks to their outstanding visuals and smooth gameplay. The creators of the original, Moon Studios, are currently focused on their project No Rest for the Wicked and have previously stated that Ori's story is complete for them. However, the intellectual property rights belong to Microsoft, allowing them to involve third-party developers.

  • Possible release window: the new game could be released in 2026.
  • Platforms: given the series' history, the project has a strong chance of arriving not only on Xbox and PC, but also on Nintendo consoles.

No official announcement has been made yet, but fans of atmospheric Metroidvanias should keep their fingers on the pulse.
