Valheim Developers Respond to Frame Rate Issues on Switch 2 and Promise Patches

Valheim developers commented on frame stability issues on Switch 2 and promised to release patches with optimization.

Today marked the release of the popular Scandinavian survival game Valheim on the Switch 2 platform, alongside the major expansion Deep North. The developers from Iron Gate and publisher Coffee Stain Publishing offered players three graphics modes: "Quality" (30 fps), "Balanced" (40 fps), and "Performance" (60 fps).

However, following the release, the first players began complaining about noticeable stuttering during gameplay. A representative of the development team promptly commented on the situation, explained the nature of these issues, and provided several tips.

Why is the game stuttering and how to fix it?

According to the developer, the instability is caused by a combination of real-time world generation and the fact that the game in performance mode does not always achieve a stable 60 fps:

  • Recommended modes: If frame rate fluctuations bother you, the developers advise switching to "Balanced" (40 fps) or "Quality" (30 fps) mode — they provide significantly smoother and more consistent frame pacing.
  • Handheld mode advantage: In handheld format, Switch 2 supports variable refresh rate (VRR), which significantly softens drops in "Performance" mode. In the TV dock, the VRR feature is currently not active.
  • Graphics toggles: Changing individual sliders in the settings does not affect world generation latency, so they can be left enabled.

Further optimization

The team assured that active optimization of the game for Switch 2 will continue going forward, aiming to achieve a stable 60 fps in future patches.

As a reminder, the Switch 2 version of Valheim supports full crossplay, touch inventory controls, gyro aiming, and enhanced HD Rumble 2 haptic feedback.
