US Representative Ritchie Torres plans to introduce a new bill titled Power to the Players Act. This legislative initiative aims to protect consumer rights and legally establish players' true ownership of digital copies of video games.
What could the new law change?
If the bill is passed, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will be granted the authority to implement strict regulatory rules for publishers and platform owners. In particular, the initiative provides for:
- A ban on companies freely and unreasonably revoking digital licenses from users;
- Restrictions on the premature shutdown of online game servers;
- Protection against the sudden removal of titles from sale (delisting) without maintaining access for buyers.
The issue of preserving access to purchased content is becoming increasingly relevant for the entire industry—especially against the backdrop of closing previous-generation digital storefronts and the shift toward purely digital ecosystems.
