FromSoftware's The Duskbloods Could Have Been a "Cute" Nintendo-Style Game

Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that at the start of development in 2021, the game The Duskbloods had a much cuter style inspired by Nintendo aesthetics.

The new game from FromSoftware called The Duskbloods is known today for its signature aesthetic: a gloomy Victorian gothic world with strange elements like steam trains, dinosaurs, and a giant frog lady. However, the initial vision for the project was radically different.

Unexpected Origins of The Duskbloods

Studio head and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed in a recent interview that the game's visual style underwent "radical changes" since the start of development in 2021. As it turned out, the initial concept was created with a focus on a much brighter and cuter style inspired by the aesthetics of Nintendo games.

  • Development start year: 2021;
  • Initial concept: cute and cozy visual style in the spirit of Nintendo;
  • Final result: gloomy Victorian gothic characteristic of FromSoftware.

Ultimately, the team returned to their familiar dark tone, but the very thought that the creators of Souls games could have released a project in Nintendo's style intrigues many fans.
