The composer of the cult game Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Kumi Tanioka, expressed her surprise and outrage after a new EP appeared under her name on the Spotify streaming service, with which she had no involvement whatsoever.
Fake Release on Official Page
On social network X, Tanioka shared that an EP titled A Village Built on Wind unexpectedly appeared on her verified Spotify profile. She stated: “This album was definitely not created by me,” suggesting that the tracks might have been AI-generated or uploaded by someone with the same name.
The situation raises concerns, as Tanioka holds verified artist status on the platform, which is supposed to guarantee the authenticity of releases, yet Spotify freely attached third-party content to her official discography.
Publisher's Reaction and the AI Issue
Digital Sonic Design, the company that publishes the composer's music, released an official statement regarding the incident:
- The tracks do not infringe on copyrights of Tanioka's original works, but they mislead listeners due to false attribution.
- On YouTube Music, these same tracks were already labeled as AI-generated.
- The perpetrators took advantage of vulnerabilities and flawed content verification on streaming platforms.
The publisher emphasized that such manipulations with generative AI and unofficial releases are becoming increasingly common, requiring the industry to develop new mechanisms to protect genuine creators.
