STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT Producer Explains the Reasons Behind the Game's Delay

The producer of STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT has explained why the remake of the cult visual novel had to be delayed until late 2026.

The release of the long-awaited visual novel STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 is scheduled for October 29, 2026. Fans have had to be patient, as the release was originally planned for 2025. In an interview with Automaton-Media, project producer Tatsuya Matsubara explained what caused the delay.

Creating the Game Almost from Scratch

According to Matsubara, the team decided to approach updating the original story not as a simple remaster, but as a full-fledged reimagining.

«Even though it’s a remake, we approached it as if we were creating a completely new game from scratch. We redrew and rebuilt everything, starting from the storyboards for the story CG illustrations. When we saw the characters come to life thanks to E-mote technology, we went further—adding animation to CG scenes and refining visual effects, such as during the PhoneWave activation», the producer shared.

He also noted that in the original, all such effects were pre-rendered video clips, whereas in the remake, they were turned into full real-time particle effects.

What Awaits Players

The updated version of STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT offers:

  • Completely revamped graphics, UI, and character designs;
  • An updated and faithfully recreated Akihabara district;
  • A new original story scenario that delves deeper into the game's universe;
  • Modern animation technology and dynamic visual effects.

The worldwide release on Nintendo family consoles will take place at the end of October.
