Will the Legendary High-Difficulty Mode Return?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has received numerous re-releases over its long history — from the original release on Nintendo 64 to the recent update for Switch 2. One of the most famous variations of the classic back in the day was Master Quest on GameCube, which significantly altered dungeon layouts, puzzles, and key item locations.
Many players hoped to see this mode right at the launch of the new version for Switch 2, but the developers did not include it. However, fresh dataminer discoveries hint that there is still a chance for its return.
What Is Hidden in the Code
Well-known game file researcher MrCheeze discovered numerous elements in the game's code that directly point to Master Quest. In particular, the database contains references to alternative configurations of various in-game locations with the "MQ" abbreviation in their names.
Although this is not an official announcement, the presence of such files indicates that the developers at least planned to integrate Master Quest:
- This may indicate the preparation of a future content update;
- Or these could be leftover code remnants from ideas tested during the remake's development and ultimately shelved.
Given how enthusiastically fans welcomed Ocarina of Time on Switch 2, expanding the game with a more challenging mode would be a great gift for all fans of Link's adventures.
