From Open World to Classic Horror
The recent release of Resident Evil Requiem on Switch 2 and other platforms delighted fans with its tense atmosphere featuring FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and the legendary Leon Kennedy. However, the game we received differs drastically from the developers' original vision.
Well-known insider Dusk Golem shared details of the game's early concept, which had the working title Resident Evil: Apocalypse. As it turns out, Capcom was initially creating a large-scale open-world action game on the Dragon's Dogma 2 engine.
Initial Plans for Resident Evil: Apocalypse:
- A fully single-player open-world game set on a fictional island near Singapore.
- The main protagonists were Leon, Jill, Ada, Sheva, and two new characters.
- The plot took place after the events of Resident Evil Village, where Chris was placed under arrest and the BSAA organization became the primary enemy.
- Players could navigate the island using vehicles.
- Infection mechanics were inspired by Resident Evil Outbreak, with an emphasis on dynamic action.
During production, Capcom rebooted development and reduced the scope. Jill remained as an AI companion for a time, but was eventually removed because she did not advance the plot. Instead, the idea of an inexperienced character evolved into the new protagonist — Grace Ashcroft.
