Ron Gilbert Explained Why Creating a New Monkey Island Game Would Be Extremely Difficult

Ron Gilbert explained why a new Monkey Island is unlikely to appear anytime soon and why he chose independent development for Thimbleweed Park 2.

Bureaucratic obstacles on the path to new adventures

Ron Gilbert, creator of the legendary adventure game series Monkey Island, admitted that creating a new installment in the series would currently be a "really difficult" process. The developer cites the huge number of companies and rights holders that would have to be involved to realize the project as the main obstacle.

Focus on independent development

Following the release of Return to Monkey Island, Gilbert decided to avoid the complexities of the traditional publishing system. That is why for his next game, Thimbleweed Park 2, he chose the path of complete creative independence without the need to negotiate with major corporations.

  • Return to Monkey Island, which previously arrived on Nintendo Switch, brought the classic adventure game to modern players.
  • Currently, the developer is focused on the sequel to the detective adventure Thimbleweed Park.
