The Resident Evil franchise, which dates back to 1996, remains one of the main pillars of the survival horror genre and the video game industry as a whole. Practically all mainline installments of the series are connected by a single chronology and develop a shared storyline. Now, it has been revealed that this massive story may reach a logical conclusion.
Finale of the Current Story Arc
In an interview with Yahoo! Japan, the series' executive producer Jun Takeuchi shared his vision for the franchise's future. According to him, the conclusion of Resident Evil's current storyline is expected within the next decade.
As the producer noted:
- The series' plot was not originally planned decades in advance, but instead expanded with each new release.
- During the development of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the team formed a 10-year concept for the brand's development and the release schedule for remakes.
- The first ten-year cycle is coming to an end, and the conclusion of the current major story is planned for the next 10 years.
- Fans should not worry about a lack of content: several projects are planned for release before the finale.
Of course, even after the current arc concludes, Capcom is unlikely to abandon the Resident Evil brand, but we will finally see the resolution of the iconic characters' stories.
