The Story of PlayStation's Creation: No Revenge Against Nintendo
The creator of the original PlayStation console, Ken Kutaragi, shared memories of collaborating and parting ways with Nintendo in the early 1990s. As many video game fans know, Kutaragi initially developed the legendary sound chip for the Super Famicom (SNES), after which he worked on a joint CD-ROM drive for the platform, known as the "Play Station".
However, the alliance fell apart when Nintendo publicly backed out of the deal and decided to partner with Philips. Despite such a dramatic turn of events, the engineer himself assures that Sony's entry into the gaming market was not an attempt to punish former partners.
Looking to the Future Instead of Resentment
According to Kutaragi, his motivation was always the drive to advance technology and bring new ideas to reality:
- A new technological era: The focus was on creating revolutionary real-time 3D graphics and CD media.
- Respect for heritage: The developer highly values Nintendo's contribution to the industry and his own experience working on the sound processor for the Super Famicom.
- Competition without malice: The success of their own console was a natural evolution of the Sony engineering team's ideas, not an act of retaliation.
Ultimately, this split shaped the development of the entire video game industry for decades to come, giving players a legendary platform rivalry.
