New life after Xbox cancellation
The fate of the next game from legendary Doom creator John Romero was put in jeopardy after Xbox unexpectedly halted funding for the project. Fortunately, Romero officially confirmed that the shooter will see the light of day after all, as studio Romero Games has found a new publishing partner.
Reimagining and change of scope
Following the termination of the deal with Microsoft, the studio had to significantly downsize its team, but the copyright for the game remained in the developers' possession. Currently, the team consists of about 15 employees, and the project's concept has undergone notable changes:
- The game received a complete redesign to match the capabilities of a smaller team.
- The studio is utilizing all previously created assets: software code, 3D character models, weapon designs, and art assets.
- The name of the new publisher and the timeline for an official presentation are currently being kept secret.
Despite stepping back from initial AAA-level ambitions, the preserved resources allowed Romero Games to quickly restart development and give the project a second wind.
