Modders Managed to Run Grand Theft Auto V on Nintendo Switch

Enthusiasts managed to natively run the iconic Grand Theft Auto V on Nintendo Switch by overclocking the console.

Over the years of the Nintendo Switch's existence, the console has received many ports that were once considered technically impossible: from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and DOOM to No Man’s Sky and NieR:Automata. However, an official release of Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar Games never happened. Enthusiasts decided to right this wrong themselves.

Running GTA V on the original Switch

A group of modders called Paralympics Productions managed to compile and run a native version of GTA V on Nintendo Switch, taking advantage of the game's source code leak that occurred back in 2023.

Here are the key details of this fan port:

  • Native launch: the game runs directly on the Horizon system without using Linux or Android and is not streaming;
  • Size: the build takes up about 49 GB of storage;
  • Performance: in standard mode, the game delivers between 10 and 25 frames per second, but with overclocking, the frame rate can be raised to a stable 30 FPS.

It remains unknown how long the development of this fan port will continue and whether Take-Two Interactive's legal department will intervene to shut the project down.
