We are already used to seeing the iconic DOOM running on all kinds of household devices — from smart refrigerators to pregnancy tests. However, this case can surprise even seasoned tech enthusiasts: the original version of Super Mario Bros. for the NES console was successfully launched and made fully playable using a standard VHS tape.
How does it work?
This unusual experiment was conducted by video blogger and modder Throaty Mumbo. His source of inspiration was the obscure 1987 retro console Action Max, which in its time also used VHS tapes to run video games.
As revealed during the research, videotape is well suited not only for recording analog video and audio, but also for storing digital game data.
Features of the VHS version of Mario
- Unique visual style: the game runs on top of a looped background VHS video feed.
- Updated sound: audio is generated based on a separate CD track, adding an unusual retro atmosphere to the gameplay.
- Real gameplay: the game is fully playable using a connected controller.
In addition to the famous adventure of the mustachioed plumber, the enthusiast also ran the legendary DOOM on tape using a similar principle.
