The iconic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remains one of the most significant games in the industry's history. Despite the fact that the main part of the world on Nintendo 64 was fully 3D, some locations (notably interiors and certain town areas) used pseudo-3D with fixed pre-rendered backgrounds. An enthusiast under the handle Reonu decided to fix this.
Full 3D in authentic N64 style
The modder has been working for over a year on an ambitious project with the working title OoT unJPEG. Their main goal is to recreate all pre-rendered 2D locations as full polygonal 3D, while preserving the visual style of the original Nintendo 64 rather than the 3DS remake.
Thanks to this, players will get a fully dynamic camera and the ability to move freely through space instead of wandering across flat backdrops.
Where will the modification be available?
The author plans to release the project in two formats:
- As a ROM hack compatible with real Nintendo 64 hardware;
- As a mod for the native PC port Zelda 64 Recompiled.
Development is already in its final stage, so fans of the retro classic will soon be able to look at familiar locations of Hyrule in an entirely new dimension.
