Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was originally planned as a two-player fighting game

The developers of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee revealed that the iconic brawler could have originally been a two-player duel fighting game.

The iconic fighting game Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, which in its time became one of the most prominent action titles for Nintendo GameCube and Xbox, could have originally looked completely different. Developers from Pipeworks studio admitted that the game was planned as a classic two-player fighting game.

Publisher's Vision vs. Developer Doubts

As it turned out, publisher Atari initially insisted on creating a large-scale four-player brawler. However, the Pipeworks team initially did not believe in the success of this concept and leaned toward a more traditional duel structure for two participants.

  • Publisher Atari wanted a dynamic arena fighter for four combatants.
  • Pipeworks studio doubted the implementation of such an idea and prepared 1-on-1 battles.
  • In the end, it was the four-player mode that became the game's main highlight.

Ultimately, the developers managed to implement full-fledged battles for four simultaneous players, turning Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee into a beloved retro hit for friendly get-togethers.
