Pokémon Battle System Will Undergo Changes in the Future
Game Freak has hinted at a major evolution of the battle system in future mainline entries of the Pokémon franchise. In a recent video, game designer Shigeki Morimoto and co-director Kazumasa Iwao explained the philosophy behind the newly released free-to-play project Pokémon Champions, available on smartphones, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.
According to the developers, the main reason for developing Pokémon Champions was the desire to preserve the classic turn-based battle system used since the days of Red and Green, in case of radical changes in subsequent generations of the series.
Why Was the Pokémon Champions Project Created?
Game Freak representatives noted that experiments like the Pokémon Legends series were only the first step, and in the future, battle mechanics will undergo significant updates:
- Preserving legacy: players who have played by classic competitive rules for decades will always have a dedicated platform for familiar battles in Pokémon Champions.
- Freedom to experiment: developers can now freely test new approaches and mechanics in mainline games without fear of depriving fans of traditional battles.
- Cross-platform support: Pokémon Champions will continue to be supported as an independent competitive platform for consoles and mobile devices.
Thus, Game Freak plans to simultaneously develop bold new ideas in future series releases while maintaining respect for the long history of classic Pokémon battles.
