First editions of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow sold at auction for $2M

Perfectly preserved copies of the first print run of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow went under the hammer for 2 million dollars. The buyer was the art collection Dubai Collection.

Did you ever own a copy of Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow? Perhaps you still keep that old cartridge, but most likely, the box and manual are long lost, and the game itself bears the marks of years of use. Most of us find ourselves in the same situation, which makes this news even more impressive.

Auction record for retro games

Three perfectly preserved copies of the classic Pokémon games were just sold at auction for a crazy 2 million dollars. These were copies of the very first print run of each game, which received incredibly high grades from PSA experts:

  • Pokémon Blue — 9.8 points;
  • Pokémon Red — 10 points;
  • Pokémon Yellow — 10 points.

Such sky-high condition grades explain why this retro Nintendo trio was able to fetch such an astronomical sum at the bidding.

Who became the new owner?

If you are wondering who could fork out such money for a set of old games, the buyer turned out to be the Dubai Collection — a virtual public collection of contemporary art. So this is not just a random person who somehow scraped together millions of dollars, but a serious organization that views these games as true exhibits for preservation.
