Fan-made browser game Pokémon Wordle is shutting down at the request of The New York Times

The fan game Pokémon Wordle is shutting down due to copyright protection legal demands from The New York Times.

The popular fan-made browser game Pokémon Wordle will soon cease to exist. This time, the claims were brought not by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company, but by The New York Times, which owns the rights to the original Wordle.

Copyright Protection

The original Wordle game appeared in 2021 and quickly gained worldwide popularity. As early as January 2022, the project was acquired by The New York Times, which has since been actively developing the brand in various directions, including television adaptations and merchandise.

The game's success spawned numerous fan variations, including a version dedicated to the pocket monster universe. However, the developer of Pokémon Wordle reported receiving an official notice from The New York Times' lawyers regarding copyright infringement.

When will the game close?

According to the project creator's announcement:

  • The last day of operation for Pokémon Wordle will be October 3, 2026.
  • After this date, access to the browser puzzle will be completely blocked.

Fans have only a few days left to try guessing their favorite Pokémon names in the familiar five-letter format for the last time.
