Today, the Persona franchise is considered one of the most successful and influential JRPGs in the world, but its future was not always cloudless. Series general producer Kazuhisa Wada revealed that at one time, the franchise found itself on the verge of disappearing right after the release of Persona 2.
A Turning Point for Persona
According to Wada, after completing the Persona 2 duology (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment), Atlus faced the question of whether continuing the series made sense. Persona 3 became a critical moment—whether the brand would continue to exist at all depended on its success.
- Radical reimagining: Persona 3 completely changed the approach to gameplay, adding school life simulation, Social Links, and a calendar system.
- Forming a new identity: A stylish interface, dynamic music, and the combination of dungeon exploration with everyday life defined the future direction of Persona 4 and the iconic Persona 5.
- A bold risk: The developers realized they were going all-in, but it was this reboot that saved the franchise and paved the way to global acclaim.
As time has shown, the radical changes paid off one hundred percent: Persona 3 did not just preserve the series, but made it a global phenomenon that today successfully conquers Nintendo Switch consoles and other platforms.
