Studio Wondoro has released the unusual bullet-hell Air Hares on Nintendo Switch, combining dynamic arcade flight with… farming. The game launched on the hybrid console alongside the major Hare Force Edition update.
Sow, don't destroy
While classic bullet hell games measure success by the number of downed enemies, in Air Hares victory comes only when the fields turn green. The protagonist, Captain Rabbo Sunskipper, takes to the skies over depleted lands with an airplane filled with seeds and water. In each level, players must plant and water three carrot fields while dodging attacks from the hostile Gale Gang.
For the game's creators, married couple Tim and Megan Bangerter, this project became deeply personal. They created Air Hares during a difficult period of struggling with infertility, deciding to make a game about creating and growing new life rather than destruction.
Features of the Hare Force Edition on Switch
The game's release on Switch offers an updated cooperative mode for five pilots, each possessing unique stats and skills:
- Captain Rabbo — able to recover once after falling from the sky;
- Dirk Doggo — can distract all enemy falcons toward himself, giving their partner time to sow;
- Linny Lightfoot — performs a longer barrel roll, dodging the most dangerous attacks;
- Betty Bunting — steadily maintains course even in strong crosswinds;
- Candy Clayton — parries threats with three defensive shots instead of one.
Additionally, the update added leaderboards for solo and co-op, special carrot achievements (including a pacifist challenge without attacking enemies), and a section featuring pilot biographies.
