Lucasfilm Games Is Becoming More Flexible: Star Wars Entrusted to Small Studios

Lucasfilm Games is changing its approach to developing Star Wars franchise games, opening doors for independent and small studios.

This year, fans of the galaxy far, far away received two highly acclaimed games in the Star Wars universe at once — the tactical Zero Company in the style of XCOM and the high-octane Galactic Racer, reminiscent of classic Burnout installments. Interestingly, both projects were developed by independent teams rather than major industry giants like Electronic Arts or Ubisoft.

Lucasfilm Games' New Approach

As representatives of Lucasfilm Games explain, the company has changed its strategy and become significantly more flexible in choosing partners. While previously licenses for large-scale projects were primarily granted to blockbuster publishers (as was the case with Star Wars Battlefront or Star Wars Outlaws), the company is now actively listening to bold pitches from smaller indie studios.

  • More genre diversity instead of standardized open-world projects.
  • Faster development cycle compared to cumbersome AAA releases.
  • Focus on original gameplay mechanics and the developers' love for the universe.

Such openness gives hope that in the coming years, players can expect even more unusual and high-quality releases based on George Lucas's universe across all platforms, including Switch and Switch 2.
