Vampire Crawlers started its journey as a paper game

The Vampire Survivors card spin-off was tested in a pub with a pen and paper before it got the green light from the original developers.

The card spin-off of the mega-popular game Vampire Survivors, titled Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard, has a very interesting creation story. It turns out that the project's development began not behind monitor screens, but at a table in a pub with a pen and paper.

From pub gatherings to digital release

Studio Nosebleed Interactive, which is working on the game in partnership with the original creator (studio poncle), talked about the first steps of development. According to Andreas Firnigl, the paper version of the game allowed them to quickly tune the basic mechanics. Their first tests in a pub showed that the foundation of the game was already surprisingly close to the final vision.

However, in the early stages, the developers paid less attention to matching the Vampire Survivors universe. They added random content as "placeholders", which initially raised doubts for poncle. To get the green light, the team had to pause other work and focus on integrating the correct lore:

  • Fixing all names according to the game's universe.
  • Accurately transferring the stats system from Survivors to Crawlers.
  • Adapting visual and gameplay elements to preserve the signature style.

As soon as poncle saw the updated build that fully matched the spirit of the franchise, they immediately approved further development. Now, players can expect a hyper-dynamic card game with roguelite elements, where they can build incredible decks and create devastating combinations!
