Soon, on August 11, 2026, the release of the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will take place on the new Nintendo Switch 2 console. The version for the Nintendo platform will receive DLSS technology support, running at a 900p resolution at 30 frames per second in portable mode and 1080p at 30 fps in docked mode. Among the exclusive features announced for the Switch 2 are mouse mode, motion controls, and touch screen support.
Porting specifics and collaboration with Virtuos
In a recent interview for the Nintendo Life portal, Bethesda's assistant art director Dan Lee and studio head Tom Mustaine revealed the details of porting the game. Since the original remaster was released on other platforms in April 2025, the team had to do a significant amount of work to adapt it to the architecture of the new console.
According to Dan Lee, this is perhaps the first open-world game on Unreal Engine 5 for the Switch 2, so the developers had no references to follow:
- The studio's technical director did a massive amount of work to unite all the game's systems on the new platform.
- The team from Virtuos performed a real miracle by adapting the visual part for the new hardware — the updated interiors and dungeons look especially impressive.
- The game's interface was significantly redesigned: the compass was enlarged for convenience in portable mode, and the ability to use the touch screen and quickly change hands for mouse mode was added.
The victory of physical editions
A special point of pride for the team was the fact that they managed to fit the entire game onto a single cartridge without the need for additional downloads. Dan Lee, who is a big proponent of preserving gaming heritage, noted that the team barely fit into the memory limit, but achieved their goal.
Tom Mustaine added that releasing a full game with high visual fidelity on a physical medium was a huge victory. After a long process of optimizing world streaming and tweaking the gameplay, the developers can confidently say that the game feels fantastic and is fully ready for release on cartridges.
