Sonic Mania 2 “Not Completely Dead,” but Not Currently in Development — SEGA

The head of Sonic Team discussed the prospects of Sonic Mania 2, while the original game is currently on sale on Switch at a 75% discount.

Will There Be a Sonic Mania 2?

Sonic Mania — a 2D Sonic adventure released on Switch (and other platforms) back in 2017 — received a warm reception from critics and fans and still remains one of the highest-rated games about the blue hedgehog. That is why fans have been begging for a sequel for nine years.

Game Informer spoke with Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, and touched upon the topic of a possible sequel.

“We still maintain a close relationship with them [the Sonic Mania development team]. We go out to eat and drink together because relationships are important to us. They also have many of their own projects and business needs. At the moment, we have nothing to report, but there is definitely a desire to work with them again, and we think they can make a great game. The project is not completely dead, but right now it is not moving forward,” Iizuka shared.

Discount on the Original Sonic Mania

If you haven't played Sonic Mania yet, now is a great moment to fix that: the Nintendo eShop is running a 75% discount, and the game can be purchased for just $5. The promotion will last only until September 1, 2026.

Sonic Mania is a new 2D Sonic adventure featuring crisp retro-style graphics at 60 frames per second. Players can control Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, traverse classic zones with a new twist, and battle against the robot boss Eggman's army. Both Competition mode and two-player co-op are available.
