Rare sealed Mario Bros. cartridge sold for $450,000

A unique sealed copy of The Original Mario Bros.: Arcade Classics Series from 1986 went under the hammer for a record $450,000.

Another rare NES Mario cartridge has gone under the hammer for a record sum. It is a sealed copy of The Original Mario Bros.: Arcade Classics Series from 1986.

A Unique Copy

The cartridge received a PSA 9.2 A++ Sealed grade with a first-print Gloss Sticker — making it the only known certified sealed copy of this variant in the world. No first-print sealed copy of Mario Bros. had ever been offered at a public auction before.

The gloss sticker format predated Nintendo's transition to shrink-wrap packaging, making this copy the earliest surviving sealed copy of one of the company's founding games. For comparison: three sealed copies of Super Mario Bros. with the same sticker are known to exist, but only one for Mario Bros.

Auction Result

Bidding started and, at the time of publication, exceeded 105 thousand dollars. After the auction concluded, the cartridge was sold for 450 thousand dollars.
