Materials have surfaced online that may be a genuine lost prototype of the legendary game Project Dream by Rare for the Super Nintendo (SNES) platform.
History of the lost masterpiece
Back in 1995, Rare announced the development of an ambitious game under the working title Project Dream. The project was being created for the SNES in a visual style similar to the Donkey Kong Country series. However, the game was never released in its original form: its development was initially shifted to the Nintendo 64 and later completely reimagined, transforming into the cult platformer Banjo-Kazooie.
Unexpected ROM leak
Recently, an anonymous collector published a working ROM file of the SNES prototype. Players and enthusiasts have already begun exploring the early version and sharing the first gameplay footage.
- Video footage demonstrates a working build of the game with unique sprites and animations.
- Legendary Rare composer Grant Kirkhope publicly commented on the leak, stating that the prototype looks completely authentic, and even reached out to his colleague David Wise for further confirmation.
If the build's authenticity is definitively confirmed by other Rare developers, it will become one of the most significant retro discoveries in recent years.
