Double Fine Returns to Independence: Studio Launches Kickstarter for Amnesia Fortnight

Following its split from Microsoft, studio Double Fine is returning to independence and launching a Kickstarter campaign for a new Amnesia Fortnight jam.

Return to Independence and New Ideas

Following the split from Microsoft and departure from Xbox Game Studios, the developers of the cult series Psychonauts—studio Double Fine—have announced their plans for the future. The team is returning to an independent indie development format once again.

Company head Tim Schafer announced the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for the next installment of their famous game jam series Amnesia Fortnight during the Kinda Funny podcast.

The Community Decides the Fate of the Next Game

As part of the initiative, Double Fine employees will divide into small teams to create several experimental prototypes. The main feature of the jam is the direct participation of players:

  • Backers on Kickstarter will be able to evaluate the ideas and vote for the most promising concepts.
  • The project that receives the most votes will get the chance to become a full-fledged game from the studio.
  • Previously, it was thanks to Amnesia Fortnight that the world saw such distinctive titles as Costume Quest, Stacking, and Iron Brigade.

Double Fine's return to independent status gives the team the creative freedom to create unusual games that could also make their way to Nintendo consoles in the future.
