The creator of the cult hit Umurangi Generation, Tali Faulkner, and publisher Fellow Traveller have announced a rather unusual project — a cosmic horror game titled Penguin Colony. The game will first debut on PC in October 2026, and will arrive on next-generation consoles, specifically Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5, in 2027.
Antarctica, 1939, and... Penguins
The game's premise intrigues from the very first seconds: the year is 1939, something ancient and terrifying is hiding in the ice of Antarctica, and you get to play as a penguin. The plot is based on the confrontation between two human expeditions — the Nazis, who are searching for a mystical source of power for their ideology, and the Kaitiaki mission, which seeks to stop the invaders and put the ancient power back to sleep.
The uniqueness lies in the fact that the player explores all of this not as a soldier or a scientist. You possess different penguins, each with their own traits and physical limitations:
- Moving across the ice and sliding down slopes;
- Diving deep underwater;
- Squeezing into narrow crevices and caves where a human could never reach.
Lovecraftian Atmosphere and the Insight System
Penguin Colony draws inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft's novella "At the Mountains of Madness" and John Carpenter's cult classic film "The Thing." Instead of cheap jump scares, the game relies on an oppressive atmosphere of the unknown, a gradual buildup of dread, and the player's own deduction.
Special attention is drawn to the Insight mechanic, which alters what the player is actually able to perceive during the playthrough. This will encourage replayability and discussion of findings among the gaming community, as it is unlikely that all mysteries can be fully unraveled in a single run.
