Onimusha developers updated RE Engine for dismemberment

The developers of Onimusha: Way of the Sword had to update the RE Engine for a new dynamic dismemberment system. The game will be released on Switch 2 in September.

Updating the RE Engine for the new Onimusha

The upcoming game Onimusha: Way of the Sword promises to bring thrilling samurai combat with an unprecedented level of brutality to the Nintendo Switch 2. To realize their vision, the developers from Capcom had to significantly update their proprietary RE Engine.

In an interview with Game Informer, lead animator Hiroshi Yugen spoke about the need to create a "Dynamic Dismemberment System". This is a completely new technology that has never been used in any of the studio's previous games.

Features of the new system:

  • Technical complexity: Capcom engineers had to implement the system at the core technical level of the RE Engine.
  • Cinematic quality: Dismemberment is combined with exaggerated, classic deaths from samurai dramas, where the enemy remains on the screen for five or six seconds before slowly falling to the ground.

As a reminder, the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled for September 4, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game will tell the story of a young Miyamoto Musashi, who, with the help of the mystical Oni Gauntlet, fights Genma demons in Edo period Kyoto.
