The space sandbox No Man's Sky is celebrating its 10th anniversary. This year, the game not only reached a landmark milestone but also gathered a record number of players for its entire existence. The best thing in this situation is that for a whole decade, massive expansions and updates have remained absolutely free for the entire player community.
Why the developers decided against paid DLCs
Although post-release paid content has become the norm in the gaming industry, the Hello Games studio has a completely different approach. In his recent interview, Sean Murray explained why the team consciously avoids microtransactions and paid expansions:
- Audience unity: Paid expansions fragment players. The team wants every new feature to be experienced by absolutely all users.
- Content accumulation: Every free update becomes a foundation for future ideas. This allows developers to build deep mechanics without worrying that someone hasn't bought a previous DLC.
- Team motivation: Creating publicly accessible content inspires the developers and gives them the energy to work on the game even 10 years after release.
"I'm sure someone could show me a presentation proving that we would have made more money on paid DLCs or microtransactions. Maybe that's true, but I never want to see that presentation," Murray emphasized.
What is known about the upcoming "Cosmos" update
Hello Games is not stopping there and is already thinking about what comes next. The developers slightly teased the next update, which was named "Cosmos". Currently, no specific details have been revealed, however, the release is expected to take place before the end of summer. We will definitely share all the details as soon as they become known!
