Nintendo awarded $4.5M in high-profile Switch game piracy case

Nintendo of America was awarded $4.5 million in damages from pirate Archbox for the illegal distribution of Switch games.

Nintendo of America's lawsuit against one of the most prominent distributors of pirated content for the Nintendo Switch has officially concluded with a victory for the company. The court ordered damages of $4.5 million to be paid.

Details of the legal case against Archbox

The defendant in the case was James Williams, known online under the pseudonym Archbox. According to the lawsuit filings, he was involved in the illegal copying, distribution, and sale of hundreds, if not thousands, of copyrighted games for the Nintendo Switch.

Key points of the allegations included:

  • Administering and supporting so-called "pirate shops" for modified consoles;
  • Distributing cracked versions of popular Nintendo exclusives;
  • Moderating dedicated communities where users were provided with hacking guides and instructions for downloading illegal copies.

Nintendo continues to maintain an uncompromising stance on protecting its intellectual property, actively pursuing both emulator developers and moderators of pirate resources.
